Ellen DeGeneres deletes protest tweet about ‘people of color’ following fan outrage as her show’s ratings hit season low
Host Ellen DeGeneres has yet again faced fan outrage after postingn and then deleting a tweet referring to the global protests in response to the death of George Floyd on May 25.
After her tweet the 62-year-old was branded “tone-deaf” and “vague” by fans following her decision to shy away from specifically addressing the black community.
According to screenshots of her post she wrote:
“Like so many of you, I am angry and I am sad. People of color in this country have faced injustice for far too long. For things to change, things must change. We must commit ourselves to this change with conviction and love.”
However, a lot of people questioned why Ellen chose to use the phrase “people of color” in her post rather than address the black community nor highlight organizations that help the Black Lives Matter movement.
One of her followers questioned: “Not people of color. George Floyd was black. Why are being so cautious? Seriously?”
“Black people Ellen not people of color. #BlackLivesMatter,” a second penned.
Another shared: “Black people, Ellen. Now delete”.
After all the reactions Ellen deleted her initial tweet and shared two new posts about donating to the George Floyd Memorial Fund, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Black Lives Matter and the ACLU.
Unfortunately for Ellen the damage had already been done according to Twitter users who continued to air their frustration about her friendship with former Republican president George W. Bush.
This is yet another scandal Ellen’s been involved in. This backlash comes as it was revealed that her daytime talkshow has hit a season low for its second consecutive week amid ongoing rumors the host is “mean” to staff and other stars.
The Ellen Show’s viewership dropped in recent weeks after colleagues, YouTuber NikkieTutorials and fans made claims the star is “mean.”
